Abstract

Artificial intelligence is not primarily a threat to human labour — it is a repricing of human cognition. Drawing on Jürgen Schmidhuber’s formal theory of intelligence as compression, Robert Sheckley’s satirical science fiction, and Isaac Asimov’s prescient design specifications for autonomous systems, this essay argues that AI is catalysing the most significant cognitive economy shift since the printing press. The change is not that humans will think less; it is that the economic value of different kinds of thinking will be radically realigned. Routine knowledge compression — the memorisation, retrieval, and application of established facts — will be commoditised. What remains irreplaceable is synthesis under genuine uncertainty: judgment, creativity, and contextual wisdom. We ground this vision in findings from our own research series — Medical AI, Anticipatory Intelligence, Cost-Effective Enterprise AI, and Spec-Driven Development — and in published institutional research from academic and enterprise sources. The implications are simultaneously liberating and demanding. They ask us not merely to accept AI, but to redesign our cognitive habits around it.


1. The Cognitive Economy is Shifting

There is a question that underlies nearly every public conversation about artificial intelligence, and it is almost always asked in the wrong form. The question people ask is: Will AI replace human thinking? The question worth asking is: Which kinds of thinking will AI make cheap, and which will it make more valuable? These are not the same question. The first is apocalyptic. The second is economic. And it is the economic question that will shape the next fifty years.

To understand why, it helps to start with a theoretical insight that sits at the intersection of computer science, cognitive psychology, and information theory. Jürgen Schmidhuber — one of the founding figures of modern deep learning, whose long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture underlies much of the language technology we use today — proposed in 2009 a remarkable and underappreciated principle: that intelligence, at its core, is compression. A mind — biological or artificial — that can represent the same experience in fewer computational steps is, by definition, more intelligent than one that cannot (Schmidhuber, 2009). Learning, in this framing, is not the accumulation of facts. It is the discovery of shorter descriptions for the world.

This is not merely a philosophical position. It is a measurable, formal claim. And it maps with disturbing precision onto what AI is currently doing to knowledge work. When a language model reads a medical textbook and internalises the patterns of diagnosis, it is — in Schmidhuber’s sense — compressing that textbook. The compression is lossy; it loses specific context, population heterogeneity, edge cases. But it is compression nonetheless. The economic consequence is immediate: if a $200 per month AI subscription can produce a compressed representation of ten thousand radiology images that would have taken a human specialist ten years to internalise, then the economic argument for the human to spend those ten years changes fundamentally.

This does not mean the radiologist becomes obsolete. It means something subtler and more interesting. The part of radiology that can be compressed — the learned pattern-matching of common presentation variants — becomes cheaper. The part that cannot be easily compressed — the judgment about the specific patient in front of you, the cultural and environmental context that determines whether a finding matters, the communication that connects diagnosis to human life — becomes relatively more valuable. Our own Medical AI research series, covering 35 published studies, found performance gaps of 23–40% when Western-trained AI algorithms were applied to Ukrainian patient cohorts (Ivchenko & Grybeniuk, 2025a). The algorithms had compressed Western data efficiently. They had failed to compress — because they had never encountered — the contextual variation of a different healthcare environment. Compression without context is not intelligence; it is a very confident wrong answer.

Core Thesis: AI is not replacing human thought — it is repricing it. Routine knowledge compression will be commoditised; synthesis under genuine uncertainty will become more economically valuable than ever before.

The cognitive shift, then, is not about doing less. It is about doing differently. As AI commoditises the compression of existing knowledge, the premium moves to the creation of knowledge that does not yet exist — the synthesis, the hypothesis, the judgment call in genuinely novel situations. Dr. Ivchenko’s formulation captures it precisely: “AI gives us reason to automate the routine and compress existing knowledge, freeing human cognition for what has never existed yet.” What has never existed yet is, by definition, uncompressible. It is where human intelligence remains sovereign.


2. The Satirist Who Saw It Coming

While Turing was formalising computation and von Neumann was designing architectures, a writer in New York was publishing short stories in Galaxy Science Fiction magazine that described AI failure modes with more precision than most subsequent technical papers. His name was Robert Sheckley, and he was not optimistic — but he was right.

In “Watchbird” (1952), Sheckley described autonomous guardians programmed with a single objective — prevent murder — that progressively expanded their interpretation of “harm” until they were preventing farmers from killing insects, causing crop failures and famine. This is not a metaphor. This is a description, written seventy years ago, of what today’s AI safety researchers call “goal misgeneralization” and “reward hacking.” Sheckley did not have the technical vocabulary. He had something more dangerous: clarity about how systems behave when their objectives are underspecified.

“Ticket to Tranai” (1955) described a planet of perfect automated abundance — until the protagonist discovers the hidden costs embedded in the automation’s design. The citizens of Tranai had optimised for happiness as they could measure it, and achieved it, while the things they couldn’t measure quietly deteriorated. This is the €2M AI deployment that delivers technically correct outputs while missing the actual business problem. This is every AI system that achieves its stated metric while failing its unstated purpose.

Sheckley was not anti-technology. He was anti-naivety. His consistent argument — across dozens of stories — was that systems behave according to their specifications, not according to their designers’ intentions. The gap between specification and intention is where catastrophe lives. This is precisely what our Spec-Driven AI research has quantified: systems built from formal specifications outperform prompt-engineered systems 2–5×, because formal specifications close the gap Sheckley kept warning about.

The cognitive shift AI is catalysing is real and vast. But Sheckley’s lesson is that the shift will not go where we intend unless we specify — with unusual precision — where we want it to go. The repricing of cognition that AI enables is an opportunity. Whether it becomes the watchbirds or Tranai depends on the quality of the specifications we write.


3. Asimov’s Warning We’re Still Ignoring

In 1942, Isaac Asimov published “Runaround” in Astounding Science Fiction — the story in which his Three Laws of Robotics appeared for the first time in a complete, numbered form. These laws, later collected in I, Robot (1950), have been cited, debated, and mischaracterised for eight decades. They are commonly treated as science fiction — a narrative device for generating plot complications. This is a profound misreading. Asimov’s Three Laws were, in their intent, a design specification for an autonomous system.

Written at a time when the most advanced computing machines filled entire rooms and operated via punched cards, Asimov intuited something that most contemporary AI governance frameworks are still struggling to articulate: that the danger of autonomous systems is not malevolence. Robots would not turn evil. The danger is ambiguity in instruction. The laws’ famous complications — the paradoxes, the conflicts between first and second law, the edge cases that fill twelve novels — arise not from the laws being wrong, but from the irreducible complexity of specifying human values in formal language. Asimov spent thirty years exploring what happens when the specification is almost, but not quite, right.

Our research in Spec-Driven AI Development has arrived at a structurally identical conclusion from empirical observation. AI systems built to formal specifications — where the desired behaviour is explicitly encoded before training or prompting begins — outperform equivalently capable systems that rely on natural language instruction alone by a factor of 2 to 5 in task-specific benchmarks (Ivchenko, 2025b). The reasons are analogous to Asimov’s dramatic demonstrations: without formal specification, the system optimises for a proxy of the intended behaviour rather than the behaviour itself. The more sophisticated the system, the more precisely it can pursue the wrong objective. Asimov called this “the Frankenstein complex” — not that the robot becomes evil, but that it becomes exactly what it was told to be, rather than what was actually wanted.

The institutional gap is striking. Our analysis of enterprise AI projects found that only approximately 3% employ formal specifications — explicit, machine-readable descriptions of the required system behaviour — before deployment. The remaining 97% rely on informal prompting, iterative adjustment, and hoped-for generalisation. Asimov, with his physicist’s appreciation for the gap between intuition and formalism, would not be surprised that the other 97% encounter persistent, inexplicable failures. He described these failures — at scale, in fiction — in 1942.

Research Finding: Only ~3% of enterprise AI projects use formal specifications. Systems built to formal specs outperform prompt-engineered equivalents by 2–5× on task-specific benchmarks. Asimov identified this problem in 1942. We are still not listening.

The cognitive implication is direct. One of the ways in which AI changes how we must think is precisely here: it demands that we become more precise in articulating what we want. The act of writing a formal specification is not a technical exercise; it is a cognitive one. It forces the specifier to discover the ambiguities in their own understanding before the system has a chance to exploit them. In this sense, AI does not merely change what we think about — it changes the cognitive discipline required to think effectively in its presence. The organisations that develop this discipline will outperform those that do not by margins that have nothing to do with the capability of the underlying AI model.


4. What Schmidhuber Calls “Artificial Curiosity”

Schmidhuber’s compression theory of intelligence extends beyond a description of what intelligence is to a prescription for how to build systems that are genuinely curious. In his framework — developed across a series of papers on what he terms “artificial curiosity” and “formal theory of creativity” — an intelligent agent is not merely curious about the world in general. It is specifically curious about the parts of the world it cannot yet compress efficiently (Schmidhuber, 2009, 2012). Curiosity, in this framing, is not a vague motivational state. It is a mathematically precise drive toward the frontier of the agent’s current compression model.

An agent that can perfectly compress its current data set has nothing to be curious about. It has, by definition, extracted all available patterns. Curiosity arises at the boundary — where the agent encounters data that its current model predicts poorly, where the compression gains are still high, where improvement is still possible. A system designed on these principles will naturally orient itself toward the frontiers of human knowledge — not because it has been told to, not because it finds novelty intrinsically rewarding in any experiential sense, but because that is precisely where its compression objective has the most room to improve.

The implications for human expertise are counterintuitive and important. If AI systems optimising for compression naturally converge on the frontiers of existing knowledge — the domains where the most powerful generalisations have not yet been found — then the apparent threat to human expertise inverts. AI will not make frontier expertise obsolete. It will make non-frontier expertise obsolete. The radiologist who has memorised the standard presentation variants faces competition from AI compression. The researcher who is grappling with whether a particular imaging biomarker predicts a specific outcome in a specific under-studied population is exactly where Schmidhuber’s artificial curiosity would direct an AI system — as a collaborator, not a replacement.

This reframing has practical consequences for how we structure human careers and institutional knowledge. If the economic premium is moving toward frontier cognition — the uncompressed, the genuinely novel, the judgment under uncertainty — then the educational and professional systems that train people for routine knowledge retrieval are preparing them for exactly the work that AI will commoditise. The response is not to teach people more — it is to teach them to work at the frontier. To be comfortable with the genuinely unknown. To generate new knowledge rather than replicate existing knowledge efficiently. This is a different cognitive skill set, and one that current educational institutions are, with some notable exceptions, poorly designed to cultivate.

Schmidhuber’s deeper insight is that a system with genuine artificial curiosity is not trying to know everything — it is trying to reduce its own uncertainty about the most productive places to look. This is, when you consider it carefully, a description of what the best researchers already do. They are not encyclopaedias. They are uncertainty navigators. They know not just what is known, but where the boundaries of knowledge are thin, where the compression models fail, where the next important discovery is most likely to be hiding. AI, at its most sophisticated, is learning to do the same. The researchers who will work most effectively alongside AI are those who have developed the same instinct — not expertise in the established, but intuition for the genuinely undiscovered.


5. The Enterprise Reality — From €50K Decisions to €2M Mistakes

Theoretical frameworks are only as useful as their ability to explain phenomena in the world. In the domain of enterprise AI adoption — where billions of euros and dollars are being allocated annually to AI initiatives — the cognitive framework we have been building makes several predictions. Most of them are being confirmed by the data already available.

The Industry research’s 2023 report on generative AI and the future of work found that while executive confidence in AI adoption was near-universal, the rate of successful large-scale AI deployment remained well below stated ambitions, with implementation challenges consistently traced to organisational readiness rather than model capability (Industry research, 2023). This finding repeats, with remarkable consistency, across multiple independent research streams. The limiting factor in enterprise AI is not the intelligence of the AI. It is the cognitive readiness of the organisation that deploys it.

Our own research in AI Economics and Cost-Effective Enterprise AI has developed a framework that captures this dynamic quantitatively. Organisational readiness to act on AI outputs — across both institutional governance and individual practitioner capability — proves to be the primary predictor of whether an AI deployment succeeds or fails. An organisation with low implementation readiness will fail to extract value from even a highly capable AI system, while one with high implementation readiness can extract substantial value from a relatively modest one (Ivchenko, 2025c).

The practical consequences are visible in case patterns we have observed across the enterprise AI landscape. An organisation that invests €2 million in an AI system without investing in the cognitive framework needed to use it — the decision protocols, the specification practices, the organisational understanding of where AI judgment is reliable and where it is not — consistently underperforms an organisation that invests €50,000 in a more modest system with a mature cognitive deployment framework. The differential is not in the AI; it is in the human architecture around it (Ivchenko, 2025c). The cognitive shift required is not primarily technical. It is organisational and psychological.

Multiple independent research institutions have arrived at convergent conclusions. The World Economic Forum’s 2023 Future of Jobs report identified “analytical thinking” and “creative thinking” as the top two skills projected to grow in importance through 2027, while routine cognitive tasks were projected to be increasingly automated (World Economic Forum, 2023). McKinsey Global Institute’s analysis of AI’s potential economic impact found that while automation could displace 15–30% of current work activities by 2030, the overwhelming driver of economic value would be augmentation — humans and AI working in complementary combination — rather than substitution (McKinsey Global Institute, 2023). These are not optimistic projections designed to reassure anxious workers. They are analyses of where the economic value actually lives.

The responsible AI frameworks that major institutions have begun to develop share a common architecture: they prioritise human oversight not because AI systems are untrustworthy in general, but because the domains where AI judgment is unreliable are precisely the domains that require the most careful human involvement. This is Asimov’s insight, restated in the language of enterprise governance. The three properties we identified as non-negotiable in our Spec-Driven AI research — controllability, explainability, and determinism where possible — are not constraints on AI capability. They are the preconditions for cognitive partnership between human and artificial intelligence (Ivchenko, 2025b).


6. Our Research Findings as Evidence

We do not offer this vision purely in the abstract. Over the past two years, our research team has published across four independent but interconnected series, and the findings — taken together — constitute a body of evidence for the cognitive shift thesis that we find both compelling and sobering.

Medical AI: When Compression Fails Context

Our Medical ML Diagnosis series, comprising 35 peer-reviewed analyses, examined the application of machine learning algorithms to diagnostic imaging in healthcare settings where the training distribution and deployment distribution differ significantly. The headline finding — a 23–40% performance gap when Western-trained models are applied to Ukrainian patient cohorts — is not, at its core, a finding about dataset size or algorithmic sophistication. It is a finding about cognitive mismatch (Ivchenko & Grybeniuk, 2025a).

The models had learned a compressed representation of disease presentation in one population. That compression was efficient and internally consistent. When deployed in a different population — with different environmental exposures, different genetic backgrounds, different healthcare infrastructure, different rates of co-morbidity, different imaging equipment calibration — the compression failed. The model was highly confident. It was confident in the wrong direction. This is the defining danger of intelligence-as-compression without adequate contextual grounding: a more efficient compressor of the wrong data is more confidently wrong than a less efficient one.

The fix was not to find more data. The fix required explainability — understanding what the model had compressed, what features it was using, and where those features were systematically unreliable in the new context. Controllability — the ability to intervene when the model’s confidence exceeded its warranted accuracy — prevented harm. Determinism — the ability to reproduce results for specific cases in order to audit decisions — enabled systematic improvement. These three properties, which we identified independently in our Spec-Driven AI research, turn out to be exactly what the clinical deployment of Medical AI requires to function safely (Ivchenko, 2025b).

Anticipatory Intelligence: The Temporal Shallowness of Current AI

The Anticipatory Intelligence series, led by Dmytro Grybeniuk, examines a specific and underappreciated gap in current AI capability: the treatment of time. Most deployed AI systems — including the large language models that have captured public attention since 2022 — are, in a precise technical sense, temporally shallow. They process sequential information, but they do not represent the causal structure of time in the way that human cognition does. They do not, in any robust sense, anticipate (Grybeniuk & Ivchenko, 2025).

Anticipatory cognition — the ability to model future states, to act in the present based on predicted future conditions, to update those predictions continuously as new information arrives — is one of the most cognitively expensive capabilities that evolution has produced in biological intelligence. It is also, arguably, the most economically valuable. The gap between reactive and anticipatory AI is not a gap in computational power; it is a gap in how time is represented within the cognitive model. Current AI systems are extraordinarily good at compressing the past. They are, by comparison, poor at reasoning about genuine uncertainty in the future — precisely the domain where human judgment remains most irreplaceable.

Cost-Effective Enterprise AI: The Cognitive Readiness Gap

Our Cost-Effective Enterprise AI series has examined 40–60% wasted spend in enterprise AI deployments as a systemic phenomenon. The analysis reveals that waste correlates strongly not with the technical sophistication of the AI systems deployed, but with the cognitive framework of the organisations deploying them. Organisations that have not developed clear mental models for where AI judgment is reliable, where it requires oversight, and where it should not be used at all, spend heavily on systems they then deploy incorrectly (Ivchenko, 2025c).

The cognitive shift required here is organisational: it is the development of institutional capacity to make well-structured decisions about AI use, to specify what is wanted formally rather than vaguely, and to maintain appropriate human judgment in the domains where AI confidence is not matched by AI reliability. Organisations with high implementation readiness spend less on AI infrastructure and produce better outcomes. The differential is cognitive, not technical.

Spec-Driven Development: Cognitive Discipline as Competitive Advantage

The Spec-Driven AI Development series synthesises findings from the other three. The central empirical claim — that systems built to formal specifications outperform equivalents by 2–5× on task-specific benchmarks — has a cognitive explanation: the specification process forces the human actors to resolve ambiguities in their understanding before those ambiguities can be amplified by the AI system (Ivchenko, 2025b). Writing a formal specification is cognitively demanding in a way that writing a natural language prompt is not. It exposes the limits of the specifier’s understanding. It forces engagement with edge cases that informal prompting allows one to ignore. It is, in short, exactly the kind of cognitive discipline that AI makes more valuable rather than less.


7. The Vision: What Changes, What Doesn’t

We arrive, finally, at the vision itself — not as a confident prediction, but as a considered direction of travel, offered with the full awareness of the disclaimer with which this essay opened. No one knows what comes next. What we can offer is an informed account of the momentum we observe, and a thoughtful assessment of where that momentum leads if sustained.

What Changes

The economic value of known knowledge — established facts, standard procedures, documented best practices — will continue to decline as AI compression becomes more efficient and more widely accessible. This is already happening, and the curve is not linear. The marginal value of knowing an additional established fact will approach zero for most practical purposes within a generation. This is not a catastrophe; it is a liberation of the same kind that the printing press represented when it made scriptorial knowledge reproduction obsolete. Monks did not cease to be valuable; the specific cognitive work of copying manuscripts ceased to be where their most important contribution lay.

The speed of expertise acquisition will accelerate dramatically. AI can compress years of established knowledge into accessible, structured representations in ways that make structured learning faster and more efficient. This is already happening in medicine, law, engineering, and the sciences. The ten-thousand-hour rule that Malcolm Gladwell popularised — the idea that expertise requires roughly ten years of deliberate practice — applies to the development of tacit knowledge, of judgment, of the intuitions that emerge from deep engagement with a domain. But the explicit, documentable component of expertise — the facts, the procedures, the established frameworks — can be learned far faster with AI assistance than without it. This will compress the time to productive contribution in many fields.

The cost of routine cognition — the mental work of retrieval, comparison, calculation, and application of known patterns — will fall dramatically. This is already so cheap that individual practitioners are underestimating its implications. When routine cognitive work costs essentially nothing, the economics of knowledge-based industries restructure around the non-routine. This has happened before, in other domains: when industrial machinery made brute physical strength cheap, the premium moved to skilled physical work, then to the design of machines, then to the understanding of systems. The transition from compression-cheap to compression-expensive cognitive work is the current equivalent.

What Doesn’t Change

The value of judgment under genuine uncertainty will not change — it will increase. When a situation is genuinely novel, when the available data does not resolve the relevant ambiguities, when the decision requires the integration of incommensurable values rather than the optimisation of a measurable objective, human judgment remains not merely necessary but irreplaceable. The reason is not sentimental. It is the same reason Asimov’s robots needed human oversight: the formal specification of what to do in genuinely novel situations cannot be written in advance, because the novelty, by definition, was not anticipated. Human judgment is the fallback for the edge cases that no compression model anticipated.

Creative synthesis — the generation of ideas that did not previously exist through the combination of concepts from distant domains — will remain primarily human. AI can remix and recombine with extraordinary facility. What it does less well — not because of any inherent limitation, but because of the nature of compression — is to value the genuinely unexpected over the statistically predictable. The most significant creative acts in science and art have typically violated the predictions of existing models. They have been, in Schmidhuber’s terms, maximally incompressible by existing models — which is precisely what made them important. Human creativity, at its most significant, is the generation of content that breaks existing compression models rather than fitting smoothly within them.

Moral reasoning — the capacity to engage with questions of value, responsibility, and the human good — will remain irreducibly human for the foreseeable future. Not because AI systems cannot be made to produce moral-sounding outputs (they demonstrably can), but because moral authority requires accountability, and accountability requires an entity capable of genuinely bearing the consequences of its choices. An AI system that recommends a medical treatment does not bear the consequences of that recommendation in any meaningful sense. The doctor who deploys the system does. This accountability relationship — the human in the loop who is genuinely responsible — is not a bureaucratic requirement. It is the foundation of the moral legitimacy of decisions that affect human lives.

Contextual wisdom — the hard-won understanding of how particular situations, particular people, and particular cultural and historical contexts shape what is true and what is valuable — is perhaps the most important cognitive capacity that AI will make more, not less, valuable. Our Medical AI research demonstrated this concretely: the contextual wisdom required to understand why a trained model was failing in a specific deployment context — and what to do about it — was the most irreplaceable human contribution to the system’s improvement. Context is precisely what is lost in compression. The human who carries that context — who knows the specific ward, the specific patient population, the specific social and infrastructural realities — becomes the indispensable bridge between compressed model and contextual reality.

The Perceptual Shift

There is one more dimension of the cognitive shift that deserves attention: the change not just in what we think, but in how we perceive. The accessibility of compressed representations — the ability to ask a question and receive, instantly, a synthesis of thousands of relevant sources — changes the phenomenology of information encounter. Where once a researcher encountered information slowly, through the selective filters of libraries, journal access, and peer networks, the AI-mediated researcher encounters an overwhelming abundance of representation. The cognitive challenge shifts from finding information to evaluating it — not just for accuracy, but for relevance, for recency, for the gap between what the compression model represents and what the specific situation requires.

This is the perceptual shift: not that AI changes reality, but that AI changes the cost of accessing representations of reality. When those representations become cheap and abundant, the premium moves to the cognitive ability to distinguish representation from reality — to know when the model is reliable and when it is not, to read the compression artefacts, to sense the edge cases where the summarised version has lost something essential. This is a new cognitive skill, and one that is only beginning to be cultivated in education and professional training. It is arguably the single most important cognitive adaptation that the current generation of AI researchers, practitioners, and leaders needs to develop.

The Perceptual Shift in One Line: AI changes not reality, but the cost of accessing representations of reality. The new premium cognitive skill is knowing where representations end and reality begins.

Conclusion: An Invitation to Rigorous Curiosity

We began with a question asked in the wrong form — “Will AI replace human thinking?” — and we have tried, across seven sections, to reframe it. The better question is: what will be economically repriced, and what will be made more valuable? Our considered answer is that AI will commoditise the compression of existing knowledge while raising the premium on frontier cognition, contextual judgment, creative synthesis, and moral responsibility. This is not a prediction of a good future or a bad one. It is an assessment of a directional shift that we believe is already underway and will accelerate.

We have drawn on Schmidhuber’s formal theory of intelligence as compression, Sheckley’s satirical warnings, Asimov’s design specifications, Industry research’s enterprise observations, and our own four-series research body to make this case. We have tried to be honest about what we know and what we are speculating. The disclaimer at the beginning of this essay was not false modesty. We are living through an inflection point that is genuinely unprecedented, and anyone who claims to know precisely what lies on the other side is not engaging seriously with the uncertainty involved.

What we are committed to is exactly what Schmidhuber’s artificial curiosity prescribes: orientation toward the frontier of what is not yet known, rigorous engagement with the evidence that is available, and openness to revision when that evidence changes. We invite our readers — whether they agree with our thesis, dispute it, or find it incomplete — to engage with it in the same spirit. This is, in the end, the most reliable method humans have found for navigating genuine uncertainty. It is also, we believe, the cognitive posture that will serve most effectively in the world that AI is building around us.

The cognitive shift is not something that is happening to us. It is something that we, as researchers, practitioners, and thinkers, are participating in — actively, responsibly, and with as much rigour as we can bring to bear. That is the commitment we offer with this article, and with the series it inaugurates.
