The dominant narrative around artificial intelligence economics focuses on productivity gains, labor displacement, and cost optimization. A less examined but potentially more consequential dimension is emerging: the erosion of collective human knowledge when AI substitutes for cognitive effort rather than augmenting it. This article analyzes the economic implications of knowledge collapse — a phenomenon formalized by Acemoglu, Kong, and Ozdaglar (2026) — through the lens of complementarity between general and context-specific knowledge, learning externalities, and welfare-optimal AI precision levels. We examine how the micro-macro productivity disconnect, the education-gap narrowing effect, and the pro-worker AI framework intersect to reveal a fundamental tension in AI deployment strategy: maximizing short-term task efficiency may systematically destroy the knowledge infrastructure that sustains long-term economic value.
